RATIONALE: Information technology is pervasive in the world of business and competence with this technology is imperative for the accounting profession. Accounting bodies and communities have constantly stressed the need for a shift in accounting education by increasing the knowledge of systems and information technology knowledge. Technology is stripping away many of an accountant’s once familiar benchmarks: the conventional accounting activities and reporting. The introduction of computer-integrated systems is, in fact, transforming the way information is captured, stored and manipulated - changes that can profoundly affect how accounting processes are performed.
A well-crafted computer-based accounting program offered by ACLC can attract students particularly those interested in a more “techno-oriented” approach to accounting that will produce highly marketable job applicants. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Associate Degree in Computer-Based Bookkeeping is a two-year ladderized program for students interested in acquiring computer proficiency as applied in the accounting profession. It provides entry-level skills for working as an accounting clerk and/or bookkeeper and provides an opportunity to advance further into the baccalaureate degree in accountancy. Students are trained to learn how to use commercially available computer-based accounting systems. The Certificate in Computer-Based Accounting is given upon completion of the first two trimesters as the students learn the fundamentals of accounting theory and practices with hands-on bookkeeping experience using the MYOB accounting software. Advancing two trimesters further, upon receiving the Diploma in Computer-Based Accounting, the students have already acquired knowledge about financial accounting theories, problems and solutions, and introduced to another accounting software – MSGP. The last two (2) trimesters consist of topics related to inventory management, cash management and asset management. A special project culminates the program as the student applies all the theories learned and skills acquired in a particular case study in accounting process.
